Store Index - Operating Systems Book:
by Robert Cowart, Brian Knittel Paperback - 1506 pages Bk & Cd Rom edition (March 2000) Que ISBN: 0789721252 Dimensions (in inches): 2.44 x 8.40 x 8.08 The problem with the Microsoft Windows 2000 family of operating systems is that they were designed by techies, for techies. Networks built around Windows 2000, with Server in the back room and Professional on everyone's personal machine, are reliable, secure, and easy to manage--which does you precisely no good if you're not a technical person but you just want to figure out how to print to the color printer in the other room without waiting all day for the network person to get to your cube. Special Edition Using Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional can help you out. It explains the workings of Windows 2000 Professional in no-nonsense terms that, while dry, will allow you to get the computer stuff out of the way as soon as possible, so you can get back to your real work. It's not a bad reference if you happen to be the network person either, as a matter of fact. Like the other books in this series, this large volume combines background text (which explains, to cite two examples, printer naming conventions and local area network operating principles), followed by no-frills procedures. This book, unlike most of its series mates, includes troubleshooting flow diagrams to help you pinpoint problems. Do you see such and such a condition? If so, try this. If not, check for this other symptom. The troubleshooting trees go on like that, helping inexperienced problem solvers check the right things and preventing experienced engineers from missing details. The flow diagrams are a great addition to a respected format. --David Wall Topics covered: - Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional for power users or network administrators - Pre-installation - Initial configuration - Networking - Applications management - Printing - Collaboration - Extensive network troubleshooting information Spotlight Reviews: Reviewer: krish27 from PLAINSBORO, NJ USA This is a very well written book that covers comprehensively and in depth all the important features of Windows 2000 Professsional and is ideally suited for technical professionals who use the OS. I am a developer of business applications on Windows 2000 platform, so it is essential for me to have an intimate knowledge of the OS. I studied this book cover to cover and I heartily and unhesitatingly recommend this book. This book can be used both as a study guide as well as a reference. Reviewer: foodaone from Burlington, MA United States I've not bought a book on an OS since NT 4. My intent is to use this and the Windows 2000 Professional Expert Companion as a reference. I find this book to be more useful than the other. The explanations are clear and covers topics well. The other book is good but I find coverage of some topics less complete. Just the installation section is impressive covering most setup scenarios from dual boot with Win9x, NT or Linux to triple boot with the aforementioned OSes. I really enjoy the security suggestions and tricks, though I think the author's security beliefs is a bit extreme or paranoid for home use or even the office but it's better to err on the side of caution. Considering I've only spent an hour with this gem, it's a quick read and I've found some cool stuff on security. Highly recommended. Reviewer: Frank from Toronto, Ontario CANADA While my copy of the MS Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit sits on my bookshelf, Que's Windows 2000 Professional Special Edition sits right beside my computer - because it's so much easier to find the answers I need in it. Cowart and Knittel write clearly and succinctly and they use lots of graphics and other visual aids to explain each topic. Most chapters include both troubleshooting and tips sections. Finding where to look in this massive book is so easy. First, the single page "Contents at a Glance" focuses your search on the right chapter. Then the detailed contents of each chapter are outlined in the following 18 pages - so you can literally leap to the right page. Someday I'll probably be glad I've got the MS W2K Pro Resource Kit, but for now Que's book is where I look first. |
